Background: Suicidal behavior is a complex and serious mental health concern that affects individuals across all age groups. It often results from untreated psychiatric conditions, including psychotic symptoms, emotional distress, and social isolation, or a lack of coping mechanisms. Suicide remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide, making early prevention strategies essential. Measures such as early identification of warning signs, mental health education, community awareness, and psychological support play a critical role in reducing suicidal behavior.
Aim: The main aim of the study was to assess the knowledge regarding prevention of suicidal behavior strategies among patients diagnosed with schizophrenia exhibiting psychotic symptoms.
Materials and Methods: A non-experimental descriptive research design was used. A simple random sampling technique was used to obtain 50 study samples. Data were collected by using a self-structured knowledge questionnaire. The study was conducted at a selected hospital, Mangaluru. Data was analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics.
Result: The study findings revealed that among 50 samples, the majority of 28(56%) had inadequate knowledge, 22(44%) had moderate knowledge, and none of them had adequate knowledge regarding prevention of suicidal behavior strategies. The overall mean score and standard deviation were 11.6±3.9, and the mean score percentage was average (38.66%) regarding suicidal behavior and prevention of suicidal behavior strategies.
Conclusion: The study concluded that the majority of patients had inadequate knowledge regarding prevention of suicidal behavior strategies. The information booklet was distributed to the patients to improve knowledge regarding prevention of suicidal behavior strategies among patients diagnosed with schizophrenia exhibiting psychotic symptoms.
