Abstract:

Effectiveness of Jacobson’s Progressive Muscle Relaxation Technique to Reduce the Level of Burnout Among Non-Nationalized Bank Employees in a Selected Area of the City. Occupational stress is a major concern in today’s workforce, significantly affecting individual well-being and national productivity. Health plays a crucial role in the overall development of a nation, and occupational morbidities can reduce a country's GDP by 10–20%. The banking sector, being a service-oriented field, is particularly vulnerable to interpersonal pressures and work-related stress, which often lead to burnout—a state of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced professional efficacy. Factors such as heavy workloads, monotonous tasks, and lack of adequate compensation contribute to job dissatisfaction, absenteeism, and decreased productivity among bank employees. Therefore, identifying and managing burnout is essential to enhance employees’ mental health and organizational performance. The present study aimed to assess the effectiveness of Jacobson’s Progressive Muscle Relaxation (JPMR) technique in reducing burnout among non-nationalized bank employees in a selected area of the city. The specific objectives were: (1) to assess the pre-test level of burnout among the participants, (2) to determine the effectiveness of the JPMR technique in reducing burnout levels, and (3) to identify the association between the pre-test level of burnout and selected demographic variables. A pre-test post-test control group design was adopted for this study. The Burnout Assessment Tool was developed and tested for reliability and validity. Data collection was conducted in three phases, and both descriptive and inferential statistics were applied for analysis. The findings revealed that Jacobson’s Progressive Muscle Relaxation technique was effective in significantly reducing the level of burnout among non-nationalized bank employees. Results from the one-way ANOVA test indicated that, except for marital status, no other demographic variables showed a significant association with the pre-test level of burnout. In conclusion, Jacobson’s Progressive Muscle Relaxation technique proved to be an effective intervention for reducing burnout among bank employees, thereby promoting mental well-being and enhancing professional efficiency in the banking sector.
